A Fun-Filled Day in the Countryside: Sumi Village in Yangpyeong

A Perfect Escape Close to Seoul

As the weather turns mild before winter sets in, it’s the perfect time for a relaxing countryside getaway. Just an hour’s drive east of Seoul, following the gentle curves of the Namhangang River, lies Sumi Village in Yangpyeong—a delightful rural destination that welcomes visitors year-round with hands-on activities, warm hospitality, and seasonal charm.

From summer stream play to a winter trout festival, and from ATV rides to countryside cooking, this village offers a wide array of experiences that make it feel like a rural theme park.

Where Every Season Brings Something New

Sumi Village is designed as an all-year-round rural experience destination. Unlike farms that offer only seasonal events, Sumi runs its programs continuously so visitors can enjoy the joy of farming and countryside life anytime they come.

Ride an ATV along off-road trails through the scenic countryside. Join in harvesting seasonal crops grown with care by local farmers. Grill skewered meat over a charcoal fire for a rustic barbecue experience. Make your own pizza using fresh, local ingredients. In the summer, cool off in the village stream or try your hand at catching small fish. In winter, enjoy the village’s signature Ice Trout Festival, complete with snow-covered landscapes and fun for all ages.

Whether you visit in spring, summer, autumn, or winter, you’ll find that the locals are always ready—with new crops, new energy, and a warm welcome.

Each season also brings its own themed festivals that showcase the best of rural life:

Spring : Strawberry Trout Festival

Celebrate spring with Yangpyeong’s famous strawberry-picking experiences, hands-on cooking using strawberries, and fun trout-catching activities in the stream.

Summer : Catfish Whiskers Festival

Dive into the season with bare-hand fishing, freshwater angling, car camping, and water play—a perfect way to beat the heat with family or friends.

Autumn : Mongttang Grilling Festival

Harvest sweet chestnuts and autumn-grown sweet potatoes, then grill them over charcoal while enjoying the crisp countryside air.

Winter : Ice Trout Festival

Try your luck with trout and smelt ice fishing, race down snowy slopes on sleds, and enjoy the quiet beauty of a rural winter wonderland.

These seasonal events, hosted by the villagers themselves, offer an authentic and festive way to experience Korean farm culture throughout the year.

1. Yangpyeong Shijapark

A Fun-Filled Day in the Countryside: Sumi Village in Yangpyeong

Tucked away in the forested hills of Yangpyeong, Shijapark is a forest healing and cultural complex created by the local government in 2018. The name literally means “a place to rest,” and it truly lives up to it.

A gentle wooden deck trail leads you past streams, shaded paths, and peaceful rest areas. Thanks to its high elevation, the air here remains cool even in summer. It’s the perfect place to breathe deeply, walk slowly, and let your mind wander.

Whether you're looking for a therapeutic forest program, a moment of calm, or simply a beautiful place to take a break, Shijapark offers a refreshing pause from the everyday.

2. Munho-ri River Market

Why are there so many artists in Yangpyeong? Maybe it’s the clean air and natural beauty—ideal for sparking creativity. If you’d like to meet local artists and discover their work, head to Munho-ri in Seojong-myeon.

The Munho-ri River Market began in 2014 along the banks of the Bukhangang River. While the original site is no longer active, you can now visit the Maeilsanghoe Market inside the Terarosa Coffee Factory (Seojong branch), where the creative spirit continues.

Nearby, you’ll also find Gallery Seojong—a cultural space that combines art exhibitions with a cozy café. All throughout Munho-ri, you’ll encounter artist-run spaces, studios, and workshops offering both exhibitions and hands-on experiences. For art lovers, this is a must-see destination.

One of Yangpyeong’s newest cultural landmarks is EEHAM Campus, located along the Namhangang River. “EEHAM” means “empty box”—symbolizing a space that can hold anything. With six minimalist concrete buildings nestled among tall metasequoia trees, the space itself is a work of art.

The inaugural exhibition, SILO Lab: AMBIENCE, is a meditative, sensory experience combining immersive media art with music, fragrance, and light. Each building offers a different theme, allowing visitors to move from one immersive world to another.

If you enjoy contemporary art or are looking for a fresh cultural experience away from the city, EEHAM Campus is well worth the visit.
