Dabong Village, Gyeongju – The Highest Mountain Village Filled with Wildflowers
Dabong Village is the highest mountain village in Gyeongju, located 500 meters above sea level. It is sometimes called “the first village under the sky.” The name Dabong (meaning “many peaks”) comes from the 23 mountain peaks surrounding the village. These peaks are part of a water-source protection area for the Nakdong River, ensuring the natural environment remains clean and well-preserved.
Every house in the village is built with stone walls, and interestingly, no homes have gates — a reflection of the community’s generosity and openness. Though small and modest, Dabong Village offers meaningful hands-on programs inspired by wildflowers and mountain life, welcoming every visitor as if they were family.

Rising 827 meters, Danseoksan spans several villages including Bangnae-ri, Songseon-ri, Hwacheon-ri, and Naeil-ri. It is historically known as a training ground for the Hwarang, an elite youth corps of the Silla Kingdom. Legend says that General Kim Yushin struck a rock with his sword here, splitting it in two — which gave the mountain its name, Danseok (“split rock”). At the foot of the mountain stands Sinseonsa Temple, home to the Rock-carved Buddha Statues of Sinseonsa Temple Site, designated as Korea’s National Treasure No. 199. The entire area is part of Gyeongju National Park.
