Village Introduction

Nestled between the pristine ridges of Seoraksan Mountain and crystal-clear valley streams, Hachuri Village (located in Inje-eup, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do) is a peaceful, secluded eco-tourism destination. Rising between 250 to 600 meters above sea level, this village has long held the affectionate nickname "Dorikkae Village." A Dorikkae is a traditional wooden agricultural flail used historically by Korean farmers to thwack and thresh field grains by hand.
Thanks to its cool mountain climate and high diurnal temperature range (the big difference between day and night temperatures), Hachuri has preserved centuries-old highland farming traditions. The area specializes in high-quality field grains, wild mountain herbs, and mushrooms. Rather than letting this vintage lifestyle fade into history, about 400 local residents pooled their resources to establish a village cooperative, directly leading a thriving community-centric tourism ecosystem.

The beating heart of this community is the Hachuri Mountain School, a beautifully renovated former public school building that has been transformed into a multi-purpose cultural space for locals and travelers alike. Right next to it sits the Hachuri Village Cafe, where travelers can unwind with premium hand-drip coffee, listen to retro LP vinyl records, browse a small library of regional books, and genuinely connect with the warm-hearted village hosts.
Experience Information: Signature Local Program
Hachuri Village offers an authentic local experience designed to connect you deeply with the historic rhythms of Korean rural life and traditional culinary heritage.
Firewood Gamasot Cooking Experience

Learn the art of building an outdoor wood fire to cook a healthy grain bowl using a Gamasot—a heavy, traditional Korean cast-iron cauldron famous for cooking rice to perfection by trapping high-pressure steam. While waiting for the rice to steam, you can roast potatoes or sweet potatoes directly in the glowing embers of the furnace. Once the rice is ready, you will enjoy a rustic, comforting meal featuring your freshly steamed grain rice paired with a rich soybean paste stew and wild mountain herbs prepared by the village elders.

Meeting Location: Hachuri Mountain School Experiential Ground (187 Hachu-ro, Inje-eup, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do)
Notes and Preparation: The activity involves open wood fires, so wearing comfortable sneakers and clothing that you do not mind getting a bit of woodsmoke on is highly recommended.
General Booking Guide
To ensure the availability of fresh local ingredients and guides, the cooking experience operates strictly on a reservation system.
How to Book: International travelers can conveniently book online by choosing their preferred date, time, and set option via Naver Map (https://naver.me/GlJImGOB).
Alternatively, you can consult with the village management office via direct phone call.
Accommodation Information: Important Notice for Free Independent Travelers (FIT)
For guests wishing to stay overnight, the community operates the Hachuri Mountain School Lodge.
However, travelers should note a unique community policy: the lodge only accepts reservations for groups of 10 or more participants who book both meals and experience programs together as an integrated package. Furthermore, lodging reservations are handled manually through internal Korean channels—either via official email (injehachu@naver.com) or domestic mobile text message (010-2128-4489)—rather than an automated online global booking engine.
Because of these collective requirements and communication barriers, it can be logistically challenging for individual solo travelers, couples, or small groups who do not speak fluent Korean to book the village lodge. Therefore, it is highly recommended to plan a wonderful day trip to Hachuri Mountain Village—enjoying the cozy village café and the signature cauldron cooking experience—and book your overnight stay separately at the private guesthouses, pensions, or hotels located around the Hachuri Valley stream or nearby Inje downtown.
