The name "Dumo" (meaning bean and hair/fur in Chinese characters) comes from the village’s unique geography, which historically resembled the shape of a long bean pod. Locally, it was also called "Deumeu-gae." Deumeu is a pure, ancient Korean word referring to a massive broad-rimmed jar used in royal palaces to hold water, and it perfectly describes the village’s deep, harbor-like coast where the candy-calm sea flows in quietly like water sitting inside a giant pot.

The most breathtaking visual attraction of Dumo Village is the panoramic view of the Daraengi-non—centuries-old, narrow terraced rice paddies carved like stairs down the steep hillsides towards the sea.
